Saur Sujala Yojana
The contribution of the agriculture sector to the Indian economy is significant. For the sustainability of the agriculture, irrigation is of critical importance, especially in water-stressed regions. Since irrigation is the artificial application of water, it requires some mechanical pressure for the discharge of water from the ground level, for the purpose of which pumps are used. To be specific, solar pumps are advantageous over the traditional pumping systems such as electric pumps, diesel pumps etc. For this reason, the Government of Chhattisgarh has launched Saur Sujala Yojana in 2016 to assist the farmers with solar pumps at concessional rate for better crop growing at reduced expenditure. This scheme was implemented by the Department of Energy through Chhattisgarh state Renewable Energy Development Authority (CREDA).Objectives of Saur Sujala Yojana
The primary aim of the scheme is to introduce solar pumps that are more powerful and efficient than the conventional pumps at subsidised rates thereby lessening the burden of the farmers expending on irrigation pumps. Also, it enhances the income of the farmer.Benefits of Solar Pumps
No electricity required: Solar Pumps are highly beneficial for the watershed areas where the facility of electricity is unavailable as it utilizes the peak rays of sunlight during the long days of summer during which the demand for water will be high. Durable and easy to operate: This maintenance period is 5 years and requires less attention as it is self-starting and does not require manual start. Besides, it is also easily portable during the change of seasons. Reduced expenses: The cost of electricity/diesel will be saved since the future price of the same are uncertain. Eco-friendly: Unlike diesel pumps, it doesn’t pollute the environment.Features of Saur Sujala Yojana
The Government has planned to pilot this initiative on a priority basis in arid regions and areas where there is no facility of electricity. It is estimated that around 51,000 farmers would be gainful from this solar irrigation pump scheme. There are two types of pumps disbursed under this scheme based on their usage capacity. 3HP Pumps: This type of pump is used for small-scale farming. Such pumps are given at a concessional rate of Rs. 3.5 Lakhs wherein the subsidy offered would be between Rs.7000 and Rs.18,000. 5HP Pumps: 5HP pumps are usually involved in large-scale farming. These pumps are supplied at a concessional rate of Rs.4.5 Lakhs wherein the subsidy would be from Rs.10,000 to 20,000. The Chhattisgarh State Renewable Energy Development Agency (CREDA) will be responsible for the identification of the eligible farmers. Furthermore, it renders technical assistance for the installation and maintenance of solar pump. Under Saur Sujala Yojana, the provision of solar pumps to the farmers at subsidised rates will extend until March 31, 2019.Eligibility Criteria
